These simple, handmade clay figures have been produced in the Yabase area since the mid-Edo period (1603-1867) and symbolize good fortune. Around 90 varieties of these dolls were once crafted by artisans, each with its own charm.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHowever, in 2014, the passing of Tomo Michikawa, the last remaining artisan, threatened this 200-year-old tradition. In response, a group of Yabase Doll enthusiasts formed the \"Yabase-ningyo Densho no Kai\" (Association for Conveying Yabase Dolls) to preserve and revive this cultural heritage.
